Organic & Health Food Shops Ibiza

 Organic health food shops Ibiza

Many have told me that turning my life upside down and relocating from London to Ibiza was a brave move. It's a dream of course, but still courageous (I forget sometimes).

We get so used to our daily routines and comforts. In London you can get anything at any time. The choice is limitless. So for a health food addict like me, leaving Wholefoods and Planet Organic behind actually gave me mild anxiety.

Where would I get my hemp oil, organic teas, chemical-free cosmetics and quality fresh produce from? And where would I indulge my obsession for browsing the latest superfood trends? Chaga mushrooms, bio-available supplements, ridiculously expensive grain-free breads, and all that?

Luckily there was no need to worry. Ibiza has a massive foodie-conscious community demanding the highest quality nourishment, so of course the island has a decent selection of wonderful health food shops. Yes it isn’t like entering the Wholefoods temple on Kensington High Street but I find everything I need. Well, almost. Organic chicken bone broth would be rather convenient but hey, it's back to home cooking...

Even most supermarkets now stock an organic range. Some of it is ridiculously expensive (can’t compare it with Sainsbury’s) while some produce is actually much better as it’s coming straight from Ibiza’s organic farms. Locally sourced, seasonal and freshly picked. Just as it should be.

So here is my favourite selection of health food stores in Ibiza, stocking an extensive range of organic products and fresh produce. As Ibiza is increasingly turning into an innovative foodie destination, this list will be updated regularly.

Let's nourish your body!

SAVIA - Ibiza town

Ooh, I do love Savia. This is probably the closest you can get to Wholefoods - it’s a mini mini version. They stock a great range of fresh produce, nuts and seeds, grains, teas, oils, supplements, natural cosmetics etc. I particularly love their selection of organic, food-grade essential oils. They are so powerful, and I have probably bought them all at some point. Citrus oil to fight off mosquitos, cinnamon & thyme oil as natural antibiotics, and lavender essential oil to calm my (and my clients) nervous system. Everyone who works at Savia is super friendly, patient and helpful. This is my one-stop health food store whenever I'm in town.

VERITAS - Ibiza town

Another great one with a similar range to Savia: fresh fruit and veggies, all sorts of nuts, seeds and grains, oils and nutbutters, freshly baked bread, organic dairy products (I love my goats kefir) as well as a small range of supplements and cosmetics. Here you’ll also find the best selection of organic meats I have come across in Ibiza so far. And even better, I was thrilled to see that they sell frozen wild sockeye salmon with its distinctly red flesh and deep flavour. I wasn't so thrilled when I looked at the price, but hey it's so bloody good for you (and so much better for the oceans).

BIORGANIC - Ibiza town

Smaller than Savia and Veritas, but rather mighty, providing all the goodness of an organic supermarket. Unique here is the juice and smoothie bar, where everything is made fresh to order. Not to mention the tastiest bread that is baked every morning in the back kitchen. If you come early you get it still warm from the oven. And ooh, the vegan cakes and raw cacao bliss balls! Despite (or maybe because of) its small size, Biorganic stocks a spot-on streamlined range of organic products. I really find everything I need. All fruit and veggies come straight from Ibiza's organic farmers - seasonal and local.

NATURAL POINT - Santa Eulalia

Although I don’t come to Santa Eulalia that often, when I do I head straight to Natural Point. They stock only the finest, ethically sourced products and ingredients, as well as an extensive range of supplements and cosmetics. Furthermore it's the only other health food shop in Ibiza (aside from Savia) selling Pranarom's organic, food-grade essential oils. They also offer a range of natural therapies, from food intolerance testing to massages. Sounds like a pretty wholesome shopping experience, doesn’t it... While Natural Point doesn't sell fresh produce, i.e. fruit and vegetables, you only have to go next door to Sa Placa. So with the two shops combined you're pretty sorted.

SA PLACA - Santa Eulalia

Small but mighty. Quite similar to Biorganic in Ibiza town actually. Here you'll find fresh produce, as well as a selected range of organic products and goods. Great for buying your glutenfree grains, nuts and seeds in bulk as well. As I'm going through a quinoa and red lentil phase this comes rather handy. They also have a juice bar, as well as serving little bites of freshly prepared sandwiches and sweet treats.

CAN ESCANDELL - Santa Gertrudis

This is my local. It’s a little supermarket that is split 50/50 into an organic and non-organic section. Although it’s small you can find whatever your healthy heart desires. The room at the back is all organic: nuts and seeds, grains, oils, dairy products, teas and coffee, wine, meat etc. You’ll also find a small selection of natural cosmetics and household items. As you enter the shop, the room to your right has both local produce from the farmers, as well as organic fruits and veggies from the mainland. Here, the Ibiza island avocados really are the best. However, sometimes the organic produce doesn’t look particularly fresh anymore, especially during the high summer heat. I still haven’t figured out on which day they get deliveries but I think it’s mainly on Fridays, so this is when I head over to stock up my fridge.

Fruit & Veg Stall - Sant Carles

While this doesn’t in any sense classify as an organic supermarket it has to be mentioned. This is the most charming fruit & veg stall near Sant Carlos, just off the road towards Es Canar. So charming that it doesn’t even have a name (not at the time of writing this). The produce comes freshly picked from the local farmers. And while they don’t have an official organic stamp they don’t use any chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Just Ibiza’s fertile, iron-rich soil. Often I find the veggies here even tastier and crunchier than from the organic shops. Wonky, wild and real. Cucumbers, beets, peppers, squashes - in all shapes and forms. The fresh herbs are unbelievably flavoursome. I do actually drive all the way from Sant Miquel just to get a week’s supply of freshly picked wild rucola. And while I’m in the area, I might as well treat myself and combine the trip with a swim at Cala Boix. That’s me sorted then!

To find this delightful little place, drive towards Sant Carlos and at the roundabout take the exit to Es Canar. After a hundred meters or so, you will see the stall on your left side. It’s easily missed so keep your eyes open for it
