The TOLTEC ART of LIFE AND DEATH
By Don Miguel Ruiz
Let go of expectations & enjoy this mystical, magical journey.
From the author of the world-famous book The Four Agreements comes this spiritual journey between life and death.
If you have read any of his previous books I have no doubt you will enjoy this one, however be open as The Toltec Art of Life and Death is quite different from his other "mainstream" books.
While The Four Agreements is clear, simple and direct (recipe for an international bestseller) this book is a long, surreal fever dream. Every reader will read a different story - and you’ll either love it or hate it.
I loved it (otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this), but if you are just beginning on the path of spiritual understanding you might find the author's journey and the concepts difficult to follow. You will grasp the central themes of course, but it can be complex at times as the story moves from reality, to metaphor, to dreaming.
However, if you’re already an avid reader of spiritual teachings from different sources - be it buddhist, yoga or other new-agey texts - you will find many commonalities in what is expressed here. After all, truth is truth.
This is the first book I have read coming from the Toltec tradition and I certainly got it. But there are always new discoveries, different angles and surprising insights to be explored. I realised that I'd like to do further reading about dreaming in that context. I’m curious to find out more...
But for now, back to the book:
While The Four Agreements or Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz are certainly easier to digest, The Toltec Art of Life and Death offers a complete philosophical and spiritual journey rooted in his own interpretation of the Toltec tradition.
For me this was a great hammock read, somewhere inbetween autobiography and fiction. Nothing too heavy and suprisingly entertaining - maybe because it reads like fiction. However, this comes from someone who has done her homework with regards to spiritual reading (or rather I'm on a never-ending quest).
In the case of this book, every page is sprinkled with deep, thoughtful and magical wisdom.
If you can relax into it you will enjoy the journey!
